Shopping for a Cause: Local Fashion Trucks Join Forces to Support Mia’s Closet Houston

Decked out in the parking lot of popular midtown eatery Crave Sushi, local fashion trucks set-up shop for patrons to purchase fabulous fashions and custom finds. I absolutely love shopping but I love it even more when some of my dollars are benefitting a great cause. My friend Chelsea Coffey of the TheCoffeyBreak.com and The Coffey Shop created the non-profit Mia’s Closet to initially serve underprivileged girls with access to free clothing with the help of volunteers acting as personal stylists. Due to the overwhelming community response, Mia’s Closet and it’s subsidiary Niko’s Locker, serves all children K-12th grade with not only access to clothing, but access to recreational activities in the community and vision planning that help to create positive emotional support and confidence for these kids and their families. Mia’s Closet has two permanent locations in Parks Youth Ranch for Homeless Teens and Las Americas Middle School.

The Shop and Chew Truck Block Party was a huge success with support from the following fashion trucks: Park Boutique (@ParkBoutique), Height of Vintage (@HeightofVintage), ShoeBar, Urban Izzy, Punch Drunk Fashion Truck (@PunchDrunkTruck), The Coffey Shop and DJ Fanci (@DJFanci) of popular local radio station and community staple 97.9 The Box. I picked up a few items from Park Boutique and it’s wonderful owner Lillie Parks. Make sure you follow all of these wonderful vendors and SUPPORT them either online or if they happen to be in your area. You can also donate to Mia’s Closet via PayPal here or drop-off clothing at any of the donation sites below. Mia’s Closet can also arrange for your items to be picked-up! Check the Mia’s Closet website for future volunteer opportunities as well!

Leave the Baggage at Home: Michael Kors Jet Set Wristlet

When I graduated this spring with my MBA, all of my friends and family asked what type of gifts I wanted to celebrate this accomplishment. I did not have the slightest idea! I am terribly bad at giving gift ideas when it involves me. I started telling everyone to get me something that I could use or something that they thought I should have. I promise I lucked up in the friend lottery because I have some of the loveliest and most thoughtful friends. Even though I am pretty sure he did not pick it out, my friend got me the Jet Set Perforated Saffiano Clutch (small) from this season’s hottest womenswear designer, Michael Kors. Michael Kors and his brand have been around for over 30 years. In the last few years, his line of hip and bold accessories has taken the mainstream by storm and his handbags and watches have become wildly popular.

I love this little wristlet because I can take it on the go when I don’t feel like lugging my heavy purse around. This small wristlet easily fits cash, cards, lip-gloss, keys, and maybe a small compact. The larger wristlet can also hold a cell phone. The perforated wristlet comes in white, neon pink/yellow, and black. Take this tiny little treasure for a night out when you don’t want to carry a heavy purse  or dance the night away with luggage on your hip!

Wild about Wedges

Wedges should be a staple in every woman’s wardrobe. Wedges are such a versatile shoe and a great alternative for women who want to give their stilettos a break. Wedges are also a great option for women who may not even wear high heels! I feel as though I have more support under my foot while wearing a wedge and my feet last a little longer in a wedge than in a stiletto. Wedges come in a variety of patterns, colors, shapes, and sizes. Instead of throwing on a cute flat or tennis shoe while hanging around town, go wild and throw on a wedge! Here are some of my favorite wedges below:

Waycool by Steve Madden in Taupe

Georgina by Gianni Bini in Cadet Green

Bealright by Nine West in Black

Gray with Neon Yellow Accent Wedge by Xhilaration for Target

Steppin’ into Summer: Keds Redesigned

When I was little, my summers’ consisted of going to visit my great-grandmother and playing around with my cousins in my all white Keds tennis shoes. My dad always bought my sister’s and I white shoes growing up (especially Keds) because they matched with almost everything, we could just slip them on and off, and they were extremely affordable.  As I grew older and began to establish “fashion sense”, Keds became less attractive as I gravitated toward loud and flashy shoes with various color ways and high heels. Keds almost seemed geriatric with their muted colors. Remember when they got dirty and you attempted to clean them? You were left with this ugly yellow ring around the perimeter of the shoe and a broken heart.

Keds has done a complete overhaul of their shoes and I absolutely adore their new, fresh, and fun designs. These aren’t the Keds of yesteryear; Taylor Swift has even designed a line of shoes for the retailer in hopes of reaching fashion forward millennials.  They are easy to slip on and go with almost anything. I definitely recommend this shoe for summer when you’re just hanging out around town, grooving at concerts and music festivals, or relaxing with friends. These shoes are so stylish; I even wear them to work! Do yourself a favor and head over to www.keds.com and pick up a few pairs! Plus, there is free shipping on every order. Happy shopping!
